Mir-i-Arab Madrasah (Islamic religious school) dates back to the 16th century, when Bukhara was an important center of Islamic civilization. This madrasah was the only spiritual educational establishment in the communist Soviet Union. All leading imams in the Soviet Union back then had graduated from this madrasah. Today, the madrasah is still functioning, and the interior is off limit to visitors.
