In the Punjab town of Multan, it’s very common to see women wearing burqa. It is a totally enveloping garment covering face and both eyes. The women in burqa sees the outside world through little nets in front of their eyes. The burqa copes with the concept of purdah (curtain), that women should live in a separate room or behind the curtain, in order to stay out of sight of the men and strangers. In South Asia, the concept of purdah is not purely Islamic, but already dated since the pre-Islamic Hindu tradition and deep rooted in the society.
