Some years ago, the first appearance of naked models photos on shopping mall billboards in Beijing was once a great shock for these two old ladies. They have experienced the Cultural Revolution, when life in China was very conservative and sexual freedom was banned. At that time, one could be punished just because of wearing something deemed too fashionable (thus condemned as bourgeois and capitalist), which can be as simple as wearing Western suit or decorated color shoes.
Today, modernization, globalization and consumerism culture have changed much of Chinese life, especially in the cities. Chinese also gets more open to Western values, including sexual freedom. Once they were really shocked, these two Chinese ladies told me they are now very much used to those erotic billboards they see everywhere on daily basis.
