The Pamir, also known as the “roof of the world”, is a flat stony land in extreme elevation, surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Marco Polo visited the region and described: “It is so lofty and cold, that you cannot even see any birds flying”. Pamir is above 4,000 m beyond sea level, and snow may come at any months of the year. Pamir is extremely cold even during the warmest summer days.
