Soon after the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979, the US Embassy in Tehran was occupied by the Iranian revolutionary youths, and the American staff members were taken hostage for 444 days. After the hostage crisis, there has been no direct diplomatic relations between Iran and the US. The Embassy has been defunct and the building complex was turned into the training center of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard. The building is known by the Iranians as “The Den of Espionage” or “The Nest of Spies”, and closed to general public. But the outer wall of the Embassy complex has become a giant canvas for murals conveying anti-US messages, including this painting of the Goddess of Liberty with skeleton face.
