Gulangyu is a small island located across Xiamen Island, Fujian Province, China. The island used to be the residence of foreigners after China was defeated in the Opium War. The buildings in Gulangyu are the remnants of the era, with Victorian-style architecture, including church, cathedral, consulates, museums, and many others. This is a contrast to the modern skyscrapers of Xiamen just across the strait. Gulangyu is now the main tourism destination in Xiamen. Because Gulangyu consists of small alleys and has abundance of historical heritages, it is made as a total-pedestrian island.
