A Catholic church is decorated in Chinese way to welcome the Chinese New Year. Red is the favorite color of the Chinese, as it symbolizes happiness. Under the Suharto’s 32-year New Order regime, Chinese culture was suppressed in Indonesia. After the fall of Suharto, the Chinese Indonesians are free to preserve their tradition. Since 2004, thanks to the later president Abdurrahman Wahid, the Chinese New Year has been decreed as a national holiday.
