Saferus Dedimenambok dances for the independence of West Papua. He is one of thousands of refugees from the West Papua (from a region internationally-recognized as the Indonesian province of Papua) staying in the border areas of Papua New Guinea. The major exodus of the West Papuan refugees to Papua New Guinea happened in 1984 following some killings by the Indonesian military to the pro-independent movement. Saferus participated in a Melanesian Council meeting in 2014, where in front of delegations from many Melanesian countries, he performed this traditional dance to voice up his support to the independence of West Papua.
